Canadian Lottery Scams
Our friends from the Great White North may have a lottery but you have to buy a ticket first to win it
Several Sheriff's Departments around the country are reporting that callers are contacting elderly individuals and informing them that
they had won $1.5 million to as much as $3.2 million in Canadian lottery contests. To receive Their prizes, the callers instructed them
to send $7,580 and more to two different addresses in Vancouver, British Columbia, which was needed to pay for taxes and legal paperwork
because they were not Canadian citizens. Several of these individuals have sent certified checks, and then never received their prizes.
If you didn't buy a Canadian Lottery ticket how could you have won?
These Victims had no idea how the scammers got their telephone numbers and they are very vulnerable individuals. These con-artists are
preying on the elderly and you need to protect yourself and you family from their tactics. One of the best ways to keep from being misled
is to not send any money to anyone ever because of a phone call. Another tip off should be that if you did not buy a Canadian Lottery
ticket then you cannot win the Canadian Lottery.
The Classic Lottery Scam
This is nothing but classic lottery scam which can take many forms. You can
change the name of the country or the amount. This scam doesn't even need to be a lottery. You might be told you won a sweepstakes which is just another word for lottery.
Once you're convinced that you've won is when the fun starts. You might be required to send in an advanced fee or the information to access
your account. Think twice before doing this. A real prize wouldn't be awarded this way.
What do do if you're a victim
If you make the mistake of falling for a lottery scam there's little you can do to recover your money. Contact the attorney general and report
the crime and hope for the best. Criminals are very good at covering their tracks so don't expect to see a dime of your money again. Reporting
the crime can still help others because it can help to alert the community about an ongoing scam.
