Tax Professional Preparer Scams

Unscrupulous tax professionals who bilk clients are near the top of list also. Unethical, so called tax professionals make money off of customers by diverting a portion of the taxpayer's refund for their own benefit. They also tend to charge larger fees for their services and increase their clientele by advertising guaranteed larger refunds.

Keep this in mind when looking for someone to prepare your return and don't forget that no matter who prepares the return, the taxpayer is ultimately responsible for all of the information on the 1040.


Looking Good - at your expense

Every tax preparer wants to find value for their client. Most find ways to do this legally but a few tax preparers cross the line and either inflate your expenses, give you deductions they shouldn't, credits that aren't allowed or excessive exemptions. Many shady tax preparers will combine all of those to present you with a tax return that pleases you.

Why not? Once you've crossed the line you might as well go for it. The trouble is that even if you are unaware of your tax preparers ethical lapses, you are still responsible for what you send to the IRS. When you choose someone to do your taxes for you check their background. Ask for refernces. Ask your friends who does their taxes and whether or not they're happy with their work.

Remember, a tax preparer can both save you a lot of money and get you into a lot of trouble.
