Top 10 most stolen vehicles in the U.S.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) report on the 10 most stolen cars and trucks in the USA during 2007.

Each year, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), an insurance fraud and auto theft fighting non-profit, puts out its annual report on the most stolen cars and trucks in the USA. Their report includes the data for the most stolen vehicles by state.

Off the top of your head, what class of cars would you guess appears most frequently on the list? Do you think sports cars top the list? Or would you guess German made luxury models? Would you believe that the most stolen vehicle in the US last years is more than 10 years old?

Car thieves prefer older vehicles

It may seem counter-intuitive but most of the cars on this year's list were more than 10 year's old. In fact, 8 out of 10 cars appearing on the list were at least 10 years old. Two of the models making the list were close to 20 year's old! This fact is not as strange as it may appear. Car thieves want cars that are popular, easy to get rid of and on the road in such large numbers that identifying a stolen is extremely difficult.

Another factor making older cars a favorite target for car theft is the value of their parts. The NICB reports that the vehicles appearing on this list were chosen because their parts fetch top dollar on the black market.

Car Theft Down in 2007

The NICB had one bright spot in its report. Overall, auto theft declined 8.9% in 2007.

"The continuing national decrease in vehicle theft is a positive sign that the fight against vehicle theft by law enforcement, the insurance industry and the NICB continues to be effective," said Robert M. Bryant, NICB's President and Chief Executive Officer.
